Mom sailed with Dad for years before we came along. As we got a little older we joined them. She was a excellent sailor and loved the ocean. My Grandmother always called Mom her water baby because she grew up at the beach near Santa Monica. She learned to sail not only from Dad but from all the top sailors of the day.
When the kids started to sail with them they moved away from the competitive ocean racers to small open boats so that we could get the basics.
By the end of the 1950s' we were ready to cruise. Dad called his old friend Peggy Slater, (a terrific sailor in her own right), and started borrowing her boats.
That's my sister, she always took the foredeck.
Those first trips were magical. I hope my kids remember their trips as fondly.
Mom and Dad continued to sail together after we had all moved out and got our own boats.
Happy Mother's Day!
