Paragon V drive oil type? Manual?

I’m having some issues with my gears. I’ve looked and found several different opinions on oil type to use in the drive and transmission. I’m looking for an oil type or service manual. I believe it calls for a type of oil that is no longer available. Type F? I’ve also read that ATF in the transmission and 30W in the drive is sufficient. Thanks.

I always thought that the reverse was meant to be engaged if held with pressure and should go back to neutral when you release pressure. Is this correct?

Hi Mary!
I had a Paragon SAOV in my 79' Cal 34. The original manual I have on it confirms Type A transmission fluid.
The rest of my response is for future ref. if you ever need to swap out the tranny. I had slipping issues back in 2013. Tore into it and found the clutch pack and reverse band to be very worn, adjusted best I could but to no improvement. Called a number of co. around the country looking for parts, no success as the parts were very scarce then and probably not much better now. Wound up purchasing a complete new drive system (Borg Warner 71C Velvet drive) from Federal Marine in Chicago. They had just supplied a complete change drive train change out on a 78' Cal 34 that was in Alaska when I called so I was very fortunate. It works so much better as it is hydraulic.

The only Paragon manual I have on L-36.com is for a transmission. If you find a manual for your V drive I would love a copy so I can include it in the collection. If you don't know about the L-36.com manual collection there are almost 1000 manuals and they are all free.

I was mistaken. I had heard it called “Paragon V Drive” but it is actually the transmission. I’ll check the one on your site. Thank you very much!
